Nearly Free Web Hosting
|
Sure, free web hosting would be nice. Some companies have offered it, but it's usually filled with advertisements (with the company keeping the profits), and you normally can't have your own domain name. Whether you want a professional quality business website, or even a personal one for your friends and family to keep tabs on you, having your own domain and no unnecessary advertisements are both good things. With that in mind, we should remove consideration for free web hosting. Next in line is any hosting package that is so cheap that it won't put a dent in your wallet. There will be some quality here, but don't expect the speed and options of dedicated hosting or virtual dedicated hosting. Nearly free web hosting is mainly meant as a way of putting your website up for the world. Bandwidth and disk space are usually provided in reasonable amounts: almost always sufficient for a personal website. You should still receive at least one email address with web hosting that is almost free. Most will also include support for PHP, MySQL and perhaps some other server-side code. This is fine for a personal blog, a small company database, or something similar. If you expect high traffic, or a large database that is frequently accessed, then it may be a good idea to upgrade to virtual dedicated web hosting or dedicated web hosting. Web hosting packages that are nearly free should also include FTP access, and possibly an online file manager program. You will likely not be provided with SSH access, so if your plans require it, you may want to consider a different kind of hosting service. Web stats are usually included, but even if not, you can find free web stat services to use in conjunction with your hosting package. Some of these very cheap web hosting options also come with a free domain name, or a discounted domain name, especially if you purchase at least an annual hosting package. |

On the other hand, if you decide that you need a better hosting package, you can always upgrade to a better one. Many web hosting companies even offer multiple packages, and if yours does then you won't even need to change hosts.
